Set to 10 for sums like 4+6.
Set to 18 for 9+9.

How to Teach Single Digit Addition

At this stage, meaningful practice is key. Here are three strategies to use with these worksheets:

1. Finger Counting

It is completely normal for kindergarteners to use fingers. Encourage them to "hold" the bigger number in their head and count up with their fingers.

2. Objects (Manipulatives)

Use blocks, dried beans, or coins. If the problem is 3 + 4, have them make a pile of 3 and a pile of 4, then push them together.

3. Number Line

Draw a simple line from 0 to 10. Show them how to hop forward on the line to find the answer.

Common Questions

Why start with sums to 10?
Our number system is base-10. understanding "friends of ten" (like 6+4, 7+3) is crucial for mental math later.
Is this suitable for Preschool?
Yes! If your preschooler can count to 20, they can start exploring introduction to addition with the "Max Sum 5" setting.
