Kindergarten Math: Starting with Single Digits
Single Digit Addition is the foundation of all future math success. Before children can tackle big numbers, they need to be lightning-fast with facts like 2 + 3 and 5 + 4. This page is dedicated to building those early confidence skills.
✨ Create Single Digit Worksheet
Set to 10 for sums like 4+6.
Set to 18 for 9+9.
How to Teach Single Digit Addition
At this stage, meaningful practice is key. Here are three strategies to use with these worksheets:
1. Finger Counting
It is completely normal for kindergarteners to use fingers. Encourage them to "hold" the bigger number in their head and count up with their fingers.
2. Objects (Manipulatives)
Use blocks, dried beans, or coins. If the problem is 3 + 4, have them make a pile of 3 and a pile of 4, then push them together.
3. Number Line
Draw a simple line from 0 to 10. Show them how to hop forward on the line to find the answer.
